Riders are also useful in prolonged stages of the game. Consider that if you let the Riders spread out and attack creatures of levels 5-7, they won't survive (+if there's a mismatch in elements or bad luck, they definitely won't stand a chance). And upgrading the Riders can also significantly damage your army if you don't keep an eye on them or eliminate them in time.
