8. I initially wanted to give it a 9, but then I hesitated. I remembered how much I enjoyed the alternate upgrades, and I was tempted to go with a 9. But I couldn't. The game is still missing something. And that is a proper single-player experience. No matter how you look at it, I haven't completed any of the campaigns. At most, I reached the 3rd mission in the Dungeon campaign in the original game.
But the non-campaign mode becomes quite monotonous rather quickly, and I agree with that. The fifth installment of Heroes is good, no doubt, but... something is missing compared to the third game. It's as if they got rid of the simplistic maps, like in the original + Lords of Chaos, and started drawing them in a more or less decent way, instead of simply dividing them by the number of players and placing the same terrain in each zone, but... still. The gameplay in the third game was somehow... more diverse, or something. It's all about the maps. The editor didn't work according to templates... and the game itself flowed in a way that was... hmm... easier. I don't know why. Maybe it's the greater number of artifacts, terrain, and various random factors. I can't explain it. In short, an 8.
