Got lucky with the respawn, on day 3 I captured my native secondary town. Then I didn't go along the road but headed to the breach on the right, hoping to find the enemy there, but he wasn't there :o. I captured another town there - Dungeon - and descended into the underground. There I saw the opponent's town. The roads split, and I didn't know which way to go. I went the way his scout hero had come from, and that was the right call :D. I captured the capital, passed the army along the chain with as much as I could afford, and went to the teleport. From there I followed the road to the opponent's secondary town, where he had holed up in the Stronghold. Skills were roughly equal, but I had the advantage in troops.
