to shddr: If you don't lower the difficulty level, the player will never realize their mistakes (although you can write a private message with an explanation).

As for the vampires... well, I don't know – they're probably quite a valuable unit, especially in the later battles (and it's so much fun to cast Phantom on them in the Dead Forest...).
