I can't imagine how an opponent would come across a bunch of neutrals at the beginning, suffering huge losses in each battle, and losing a couple of weeks on the road (during this time, we certainly wouldn't just sit around, but at least gather some troops). Why are they so afraid of him at the beginning? Let him come – for goodness sake!
But imagine when there's only one average neutral between castles. From my experience, the AI with a higher difficulty level has more resources (and it's still as dumb as ever). And I have the opposite. Basically, on the AI, the hero builds all levels and buys a couple of upgrades in 1-2 weeks, clears out the neutrals, and comes to me. And I have a large upgrade, but it's not purchased. What can I offer him? Will he buy an upgrade from me? And if I build a Capitol, will I have time to buy liches, vampires, and skeletons? And then only my tactical tricks will help. But if you're playing against a human, it's easier.
