This is a very rare occurrence. If you skillfully eliminate the Crusaders, they won't reach the hero. But tearing apart Ogres is not difficult.

It's a rare case, but possible. There was no one in the army except the hero. And if you don't have ranged units (this is not uncommon when playing as Nature or Death, many prefer Tigers and Vampires), then Crusaders will cause as much trouble as Monks. And Opti has good reason to have a high opinion of them ;) (I've said it many times, I personally prefer ranged units, especially since I never build a Ballista, but I had the opportunity to see that Opti knows a thing or two about Crusaders even without an Inquisitor :) )

I'll try pitting 50 Cyclops against 50 Ogres, just like you did.

It's pointless, IMHO. 50 vs. 50, Cyclops will definitely defeat the Ogres. The strength of the latter lies in their rapid growth :)
