I once took first place in a district math Olympiad in 8th grade. I found the process amusing – I came, casually wrote something for an hour, sat there, kicked my heels, the teacher glared at me, said something a couple of times, like, "Why did you come, boy? You're not writing anything. Have you already finished? Don't lie." I came to school two days later (it was a Saturday) – and they told me I took first place in the district. Then I went to the "gifted children" competition. Another time, I took second place in an intellectual marathon at school... they gave me a certificate... and the one who took first place got a souvenir – a globe that you can buy at a kiosk at the train station for 90 rubles.
