The most advantageous position in the Castle, in terms of level 1 units - upgraded gremlins (shooters) are not expensive and you don't have to enter melee combat.
Next is level 2. The coolest are the shooters (upgraded), firing 2 times, also not expensive and accessible.

Well yes.. I agree regarding the shooters... but as a combination of 1st-2nd, IMHO Castle and Tower are good (Tower even better than Castle)... Castle has a strong 1st level + shooters, while Tower has a shooting 1st level (and there are always LOTS of gremlins!) + a flying and sufficiently fast second (gargoyles). In my opinion, the COMBINATION of 1st and 2nd levels in the Rampart is quite bad... although of course you can choose not to build dwarves... ;)
