“I am alive because the Mage Guild took pity on me,” Ida wanted to say dismissively, but she remembered that they weren’t supposed to break the fourth wall here.
“And what does that mean?” Ida barely managed to hold back a question that might not please the stranger.
The girl had learned to react more calmly to everything. Although all this uncertainty and ambiguity irritated her somewhat.
She is alive by the will of this woman. Good. But why aren't her brothers, with whom Ida befriended, still alive by her will? Why are the swordsmen who fought with no less zeal not alive? Why are Mahra and, most importantly, Master Utar not alive? Their survival would have made much more sense. But engaging in an argument meant being considered ungrateful. And Ida wasn’t entirely opposed to living. Rather, she didn’t want to pay an exorbitant price for the right to live.
“So, I have something to thank you for,” Ida said politely, bowing her head. “But who are you? And why did you decide to give me a second chance out of everyone else?”
