Zaya, daughter of Medvedson

Zaya, daughter of Medvedson, was the most ordinary girl in a large family consisting of a father, mother, two sisters, and five brothers. Though in reality, Zaya was not so ordinary. From childhood, she stood out for her size, strength, aggression, defiance, and an overall boyish disposition. While her younger sister played with dolls, Zaya played "kill the monster" with her brothers. Usually, it was Zaya doing the killing — the girl was so big and strong that only her two older brothers, Volki and Medvi, could handle her.

Such an unusual daughter did not bring much joy to her father, since marrying her off by the age of fourteen turned out to be a problem. Many wanted strong, big children from such a girl, but few wanted to be stabbed to death for infidelity or for anything else that might displease Zaya. Medvedson had to accept that Zaya rejected all the proposed suitors and chose the path of a warrior woman.

When the warrior grew up, she set off on her first journey together with her brothers and their friends, which proved quite successful in trophies and slain monsters. The travelers managed to reach a settlement of the Razumists, as they called the people from the Knowers clan. The group planned to rest in the settlement and head back, but the young warrior woman delayed her companions. She fell in love with a Razumist named Aristarkh. It is unknown what so strongly intrigued the girl and conquered her heart. Perhaps it was his refined appearance, so different from what Zaya was used to, or perhaps his mysterious reticence and ability to read and write. The travelers had to spend several weeks among the Knowers. Zaya wanted Aristarkh to take her as his wife, but the young man was in no hurry to even touch the warrior woman. This greatly surprised the girl, but only fueled her interest. Unburdened by intellect, the brawler decided that he simply wanted to get to know her better. Meanwhile, she did not leave his side for a single step and, with her formidable appearance, scared off anyone who might harm her Ari (she had not yet learned to pronounce his full name correctly). And any woman who dared to approach Aristarkh too closely, or worse, touch him, would instantly get slapped in the face or sent flying to the floor.

Unfortunately, the girl was forced to yield to her brothers' persuasion and return home. After all, in her beloved's settlement, she had nowhere to train. Besides, she needed her father's permission for marriage. No matter how defiant she was, she did not want to break certain traditions. Zaya promised to return as soon as she was skilled and strong enough to set out with Aristarkh to explore the mountains. For now, she writes him letters with the help of her neighbor, an old grandfather, the smartest man in the brawlers' settlement.
