- Return to Ikazkan. - His voice was firm, but just a trace sorrowful. - Beg for mercy, do whatever it takes to save your hides. - Lowering the gaze of his single eye into the Abyss, Kaen clenched his fists so hard that blood ran from his palms. - I cannot protect any of you. I couldn't then, and I cannot now.
Having given his final orders to his comrades, the leader of men proceeded to the so-called "east," passing both the Great Schism and the Middle Lands. At his destination—a forsaken city—he stood before the guardians of the "Dragon's Claws." Spotting a man, and such a prominent one at that, the heirs of Gif immediately lunged into attack, but a moment later froze in place, whimpered, and tucked their tails. The cause was a cry that seemed to come not from the warrior's lungs, but straight from the depths of his fierce soul.
- Here stands Kaen, chieftain of the human race! On my hands is the blood of your tribe, so let Kof, if he is no coward, brand my life with his own claws!
The furies had no need to satisfy the man's request, but to refuse it would have trampled the pride of their own leader, so Kaen's demand reached the ears of the one for whom it was intended. Upon learning of his visit, Kof invited him to a remote part of those lands and ordered all others to vanish away.
- This duel will find no reflection in legends, bards will not sing of it. No one will even know of it, and yet I've heard that you humans treat your legacy with great care?
- Since when did you become a student of men, dog? Better tell me, who whispered into your ears to destroy us? - Kaen spread his arms wide, as if encompassing the outlines of the entire forsaken city—a city that he and his followers had built long, long ago. - The Sword?
- Your suspicions are correct. Óna is against violence, but he decided that you would destroy the order of things in Ikazkan. And as you can see—he was right! Just look at what is happening around you!! And you are the main culprit.
- Are you sure? Perhaps, if not for your stupidity, we would have taken a different path, but we will never know that now.
Kaen drops his bow to the ground and takes a sword in his hands.
- What are you doing, man? - Kof snarled, knowing full well that his opponent bore the reputation of an excellent archer. - Do you think to underestimate me?!
- Nothing reflects the soul of human civilization as well as the sword. It is meant to protect one's own and take what is another's, it embodies our dreams and aspirations, the will that bends everything beneath itself.
- Very well. So be it.
