I worked the evening shift, it wasn't great, but the night shift is probably even worse.
It depends on what kind of "slave labor" it is. I've worked shifts that were three days long – you can almost always get a good night's sleep, and 2 days on, 2 days off, day and night shifts at a pretty awful place – the night shifts were relatively okay there because it wasn't as hot, and you could more or less manage to nap, but it was incredibly uncomfortable, and your circadian rhythm suffers. Sometimes you catch up on sleep the next day, sometimes you don't, and sometimes you feel like you're walking around in a daze.
