Apparently, they decided to bring back the ghosts from the second game (and the vampires from the fourth), so they made the local vampires into improved demons from the third. Just as fast and fragile, but with population regeneration. If this were another game, the liches could easily become tier 7 units, but considering their support abilities and ranged attack, it would turn out to be mediocre (although one of the vampire upgrades looks like such a unit). And making undead knights much stronger than regular (human) knights would be strange. Author

But there were only many of them in the third game. In others, there are not more than five (I don't count upgrades). In my opinion, they are added when the imagination runs out.
