The Schism experimented with various methods of warfare, including transferring power through the heart of a summoner. Tho agreed to become this "weapon," destroying a bastion but sacrificing his life in the process. His bravery earned him enough respect to be resurrected using a modified Necromancer ritual, which replaced his heart with an alchemical device.
This was only partially successful: he ended up in a borderline state between life and death, and his soul was trapped in a body sustained by mercury.
