The guy gets killed if you don't cast the portal to the town in time. Otherwise, decent gear + good reaction time = a living guy. In the worst case, you can pay for his resurrection; anyway, they give you enough money to get by.
I didn't do anything. Then I reinstalled Windows, and then I switched from a desktop to a laptop. And I never installed the second part on the laptop. Only the first one.
