As I wrote, the transformation of an orc into a troll was supported by earth magic, and this has left its mark on trolls – they regenerate, and sometimes they are capable of casting simple spells at an instinctive level.

But originally, mages didn't plan for troll casters; they learned to cast spells after the faction was restructured – when the trolls scattered and began to live in caves independently. This happened due to some kind of crisis, like an accident in the central laboratory or a war with local orcs.
