Here's how I usually play (and many others do) – Castle and Conflux on HotA, HL, 160% online.
Conflux:
Start with Monere (Logistics and Offense – what else do you need?).
The goal for the first week is to build Phoenixes with the Stronghold.
A strong stack consists of about 12 air units + level 1 sprites, and that's it. Plus, timely delivery of everything that's being built as needed.
Usually, we upgrade what skills are available. Ideally, take Armor and Tactics. (Magic, depending on the situation).
If everything needed is built, then in the second week, you can break almost everything (banks, trees, etc.) + there are always many good spots on the Conflux map.
Castle:
Start with Valeska or Caitlin (switching to a fighter).
Immediately upgrade archers and move forward. The goal for week 1 is to build horses and griffins with the Stronghold (take the necessary spots if available).
From day 1-21, buy horses and, if there's a good external stable (which often happens), upgrade them there cheaply. Also, raid banks, trees, and other resources. Build angels in the second week.
20% of the time, it's possible to build angels in the first week, but this isn't always justified (for example, if there are convenient stables, it's more reliable to upgrade horses immediately + have money left over).
A big advantage of Castle is the Archangels, which used to be angels from banks. Usually, if a player playing as humans can upgrade them by the third week, that's a guarantee of victory. Humans have a "simple plan" (C) – just find banks, take angels in the second week, and place Archons at the beginning of the third week. Conflux can't boast the same.
Therefore, I believe that in battles in the second week, Conflux looks more solid, but if Castle upgrades Archons, then GG. (A large stack of Archons – for example, 10-12 level 7 units in the third week – is not uncommon in online games for humans) – no magic can solve that. Just use anti-magic on the Archons and attack
