At the beginning, I caught some elusive vibes of a really good Castle – the Sorceress from the second game. Maybe it's because of the rainbow, or maybe because of the music, I don't remember the Sorceress theme.
It's cool that their forest isn't green, but red, almost like the Forest Alliance from Disciples. But I don't approve. I love green, but not red. And it looks very monotonous, it needs to be diluted with different bright colors, after all, it's a magically-natural faction, and a variety of colors would be perfect for them. In the same Disciples, which is famous for its muted color palette, the elven autumn land looked beautiful, they weren't afraid to add green and blue accents against the orange. Although, I compared the visuals of a really beautiful and stylish game with Olden Era.
Among the heroes, there are a few that are not bad, but they are too focused on my favorite theme of horned people and nature-grass-flowers, I sometimes create similar designs in my own fantasy setting, for example, I have a race of people that are like deer-satyrs, only their horns and hooves are made of wood and decorated with leaves and branches. So, it's a matter of taste, not very objective.
I'm still annoyed by the Fauns. A ranged unit of the first level in the ideological successor of the elven Castle, and one of the upgrades is a melee unit. Great. But the models are good. I have a weakness for girls with horns and hooves.
The tipsy bumblebees and the grape vine of Iriad (at least I can laugh at this brilliant translation) look like they escaped from a demon Castle. Moreover, the first ones are from the modern, crappy Tyranid nest, and the second ones are from a normal demon faction.
I don't even want to comment on the Aqualots, I'm glad I had ice in the refrigerator and managed to relieve the bruise from the palm on my face.
The guys with staffs are okay, not bad.
The Kirins... I remember that they were on the concept art for the third installment of the fifth game, but they are still some kind of crap. Why couldn't they make classic unicorns? Why??? WHY ARE THEY SO AWFUL???
I won't pick on the Phoenixes, it's the best unit in the Castle, although against the background of the rest of the trash, it wasn't difficult. I even like their four wings, I love that. It's a matter of taste.
The problem is the same – the units don't have a unified color scheme, they don't have a unified style, it's just a mishmash of some unknown stuff, not even properly united by a common theme. We have nature spirits, we have some kind of plant-like people, but then all sorts of crystal things pop up, ice crocodiles pop up, completely pointless Kirins, which are also animated incredibly badly, compared to them, my favorite ponies look more menacing and solid – just remember how Twilight and her friends took down bosses in the turn-based battles, even Rarity and Fluttershy look more serious than these floating crap units. The units look out of place not only next to each other, but also in comparison with the heroes, the Castle, and the environment. When I was fifteen, I came up with more harmonious and stylish Castles.
