In Heroes of Might and Magic V, a random number is added to the initiative in battle, so yes, there is randomness there.

They should have done the same in Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era. Randomness in initiative gives any creature with the same initiative a chance to go first. But no, they had to add speed as well. This is an obvious thing that they don't understand.
