Instead of making the Hive cute and saccharine, it could have been given a feature similar to the vampire metamorphosis in Darkest Dungeon (where a character suddenly transforms into an ugly, bloodthirsty monster). For example, when 40% of a stack of creatures remains (40% health for each individual unit), something similar to a metamorphosis occurs: the appearance changes, attack, damage, initiative, and speed increase, and new abilities appear. This state lasts until the stack recovers to 80% of its original size or the battle ends. Players could bring their army to such a state to overcome difficult challenges and then quickly heal them. They would eat corpses and each other, and a portion would regenerate at the end of the battle thanks to the hero's ability "uncontrolled reproduction" (eternal servitude).
