I once read about the gods of ancient Greece (I don't know if it was a historical article or a journalistic fan fiction), and it had a system like this:
Zeus and his company are the last generation of gods, and they are quite pleasant guys - gods of thunder, art, defensive war, aggressive war, dreams, wine, etc., but the first ones were chthonic gods of darkness and emptiness.
