Tactics that could be used, like in Heroes 5

Four small and three large creatures. Or five small and two large creatures. 134 hexes

1) A small creature is protected from a large creature with a 1-hex attack range by another small creature.

2) A small creature is protected from a large creature with a 2-hex attack range by two small creatures.

3) A small creature is protected from a large creature with a 1-hex attack range by a large creature.

4) A small creature is protected from a large creature with a 2-hex attack range by a large creature.

5) A large creature is protected from a large creature with a 1-hex attack range by three small creatures.

6) A large creature is protected from a large creature with a 2-hex attack range by three small creatures.

7) A small creature in the corner can only fight one large melee creature (it can "tank" by retaliating with attacks). On hexes, it depends on luck.

8) With a combined army of neutral creatures, there's a chance that a small enemy creature will attack diagonally, thus preventing a large melee creature from attacking you.

9) A small creature with high initiative and speed can run behind obstacles to avoid a large creature while the hero attacks (if the small creature has a retaliatory attack and the ability to attack and run away, it will also attack).
P.S. With these edges, 1 and 8 won't work on hexes.
Probably, this isn't everything that can be done with large and small creatures. Landscape obstacles will be much more important than when all creatures occupy one hex.
