- I understand that the right to freedom of speech provides an individual with the opportunity to express their thoughts verbally without fear of punishment from the state, but it doesn't apply to private conversations. In other words, if someone says something bad about you, they won't be thrown in jail, but that won't stop me from knocking their kidneys out... Figuratively speaking, of course.
