"On the corner of a narrow street, gently sloping downwards from a small square and framed by a wall of buildings looming over it, stood a small, two-story house. It had been built here quite some time ago, and the relentless passage of time had left its mark, but it still partially retained its original appearance. The ground floor was made of stone, already worn and crumbling; the outer walls, already covered with a fine web of cracks, were four feet thick. They supported the entire weight of the second floor, which appeared to have been recently renovated. The windows were set deep within small arches, framed by an architrave; columns on either side supported a frieze and cornice, which in turn supported a projecting pediment.
From the two windows facing the dark street, a soft, dim light poured out, dispelling the darkness and leaving elongated streaks on the cobblestones. In this light, a lone lantern standing near the house cast a shadow so long that its tip reached the house across the street. Through the dusty panes of these windows, one could see the vague outlines of two people.
In the room on the second floor, it was bright and warm. A fire blazed brightly in the fireplace, and from time to time, the whitened logs crackled as flames crept and danced across them. In addition to the fireplace, the room was also illuminated by a dimly burning lamp, standing in the corner of a small table and casting a flickering light on the faces and figures of the two people nearby..."
