Secondary skills in Heroes 3.

when an expert-level spell destroys (50 spell power) dozens of wolf riders (50 defense + skill), it says something...

I don't understand this phrase. Does a mage with 50 spell power destroy up to 100 raiders?
And what does defense have to do with it? What skill are you referring to?
