Which level 5 monster is the best?

mighty gargoyles are the coolest – they have great stats, damage, and stand firm; their speed could be a bit higher, but their ability to take down any unit compensates for it – 10 of them can defeat a level 7 unit! That's awesome... Minotaurs are okay. The Lich is a good ranged attacker, and the Thunderbird is also decent, but they are secondary.
