The Hero's Path

I specifically registered to express my admiration for the tremendous amount of work put into this! I haven't finished it yet, but I'm getting a lot of enjoyment out of it. Could I ask a couple of small questions (I couldn't find the answers in the thread, so I must be the only one who's missing something): How do I increase my alchemy skill? So that I can make more complex potions? As far as I understand, the skill level increases with each potion I make, right? By the way, I don't quite understand what the skill level affects.
