Before and especially after the fourth installment, it wasn't so much the players who lost interest in the plot, but rather the game developers. Reading the screenwriter's rambling between intense battles was far more enjoyable than the sparse cutscenes in the third game, like "what are we doing here?". One can't recall the elven verses and the widespread madness of the characters in the fifth game without a shudder.
