I always appreciated the story in Heroes, even though it only accounts for a relatively small percentage of the time spent playing the game.
In my opinion, only the campaigns in Heroes 5 and later are playable, while everything that came before is essentially a watered-down version of regular maps with the story presented in a few paragraphs of text. I don't even understand why it's all necessary, because even then, you don't feel like you're part of a larger world outside the current map, and gameplay-wise, it all boils down to the usual "kill-and-conquer." Therefore, there's no point in playing the campaign. Who knows, maybe if I had played the campaigns of the older games at a more mature age, I might have changed my mind?
