Sacred Haven of Debauchery

They have a cheerful disposition. They are not dissolute. Men and women go about with their heads uncovered, gathering their hair on top. The wealthy and noble weave embroidered strips of fabric into their hair, resembling the Chinese headdress, the *huguntou*, and this serves as their hat. They eat from bamboo dishes. They have coffins but do not make external sarcophagi; they build mounds. They are fond of drinking. They do not know from which month the year begins. There are many long-lived people, 80, 90, and even 100 years old. There are many women and few men. The wealthy have four or five wives, the poor have two or three. Wives are not unfaithful and do not get jealous. They do not know theft, and there are few disputes. For a minor crime, the wife and children are taken from the offender; for a serious crime, the entire family is exterminated. They may also punish lightly with sticks, and for a serious offense, they hand the offender over to be eaten by beasts. If the beasts do not touch the offender during the night, he is released and forgiven.
