In my case, they wouldn't be relatives. I was thinking of creating another criminal or just a person of questionable character and pairing them with a refined, impeccably polite, and sweet little girl, so good and saccharine that just looking at her would cause everyone around her to develop diabetes and terminal-stage cavities. In the end, they would somehow balance each other out, without either of them becoming a paladin or a criminal mastermind. A simple, classic duo with a huge amount of room for interaction, ranging from comedy to dark themes.
But yes, I also don't know how to avoid the fact that taking a child to harpies, goblins, or fruit creatures is not a great idea.
