If you played against the AI, I'm surprised how you came to that conclusion. I just tried it, and with Inferno, I easily defeated all the castles of the AI on the first try. I only had to replay twice, because I positioned my units incorrectly, against Rampart and Castle. And with Tower, I easily defeated the garrison. The idea is good, but you need to take spells into account, without which the battles become boring.
