Not that having a traumatic background in itself justifies reprehensible actions – almost everyone has it, and its existence doesn't always determine a person's fate; they would do something cruel anyway if it's their destiny. But still, it's better than some standard story in the style of "he was just a disobedient child, killed pets, and then got a job in the police/mafia/multitasking combat unit." As for your comrade... there are other angles from which to look at it. The sense of justice is multifaceted and is not determined solely by the color of your aura, or the number of karma points, or two opposite options in a dialogue. Most of its advocates do so because they have the will to do so, and because it brings them moral satisfaction. All human beings strive for some form of justice, and preserving the lives or happiness of people incidentally affected by it is simply a pleasant bonus on top, which objectively justifies the application of this will, even if it doesn't need this justification. After all, when some scoundrel gets what he deserves, who, according to all the laws of the genre, shouldn't have gotten it, it warms the soul. This is not a lecture – you are the last person who would need to read it. But in my opinion: to whom much is given, much is required. The world by default is cruel and strives to destroy the human way of life, and to have the strength and opportunity to improve it, whether out of ambitious motives or out of sympathy for it, and not to use it – it's not that it's "criminal," but rather, it's sad. So, I feel sorry for your friend. His death is a loss not only for your company but also for all of humanity, however pathetic it may sound.
