Which level 1 creature is better?

Yes, fairies are only useful in the early game, and even then, they are easily defeated by magic in battles against neutral creatures; losing all your fairies in a battle against a hero is a common occurrence.
As for me, I voted for Hobgoblins; they have fast movement speed and a great club.
