I understood that. I didn't understand what the second night had to do with it. You said the monkey was blocking, not the Hero. Okay. So, Beckett's actions aren't in the newspaper. Am I right in understanding that the whole theory now is based on the fact that in the first night, the Hero/Beckett had his booze stolen, and today he shot at Jack, which is why there's no Night Defense?

Not just shot at Jack, but also deflected his shot towards Ment. Because Beckett can break through any other defenses, and there's no healing in the newspaper, nor could there be – the dread witch was resurrecting the nasty Lizard.
