What bothers me more is that Gibbs is considered dead. I thought (and still think) that we lost Will.

We'll probably find out from the newspaper tomorrow. But that's not certain. According to the setting, there is no indication that Will is Jack's support. While Gibbs is described as a friend.

And in general, in parts 2 and 3, Will made it clear that he is only interested in the smell of fresh pee, not friendship with Sparrow.
