Early Experiments

1848: John Curtis establishes industrial production of chewing gum. His factory had only four boilers: in one, impurities were evaporated from pine resin, and in the others, the mass for the products was prepared with the addition of light flavorings. The first chewing gums were named "White Mountain," "Cream with Sugar," and "Licorice Lulu"^[1].

1850s:

Production expands; Curtis is now assisted by his brother. The chewing gum is cut into cubes. The first wrapper made of paper appears. The chewing gum is sold for one cent for two pieces.

The company, Curtis Chewing Gum Company, organized by the brothers, builds a new factory in Portland (Maine). More than 200 people are hired for production. The product range expands – chewing gums such as "Four in Hand," "American Flag," "Pine Highway," "Pine Yankee," and others appear.

1860s:

The products of the Curtis brothers never went beyond the state of Maine. Their unappealing appearance and poor cleaning (pine needles were even found in the chewing gum) discouraged buyers. The beginning of the American Civil War forced them to shut down production.
