Alaria Doran
The corridors of Alfard Asparagus's mansion seemed to stretch into infinity itself. Thousands of ominous doors, behind which could hide both fearsome demons and expertly prepared dishes — no doubt mockeries from the cruel master of this place — weighed on the psyche of anyone who had ever dealt with this enigmatic being. But right now Alaria had no time for that. Although she had absolutely no memory of how she ended up here, what she had been doing before, or why she was clutching a completely unfamiliar sword in her hands, only one idea spun through her mind: "Elrina is somewhere here." What exactly had led her to this idea, she also did not remember, and for some reason didn't even question it. This obsessive thought permeated every fiber of the Tanarsian's being.
One by one she opened the doors, and each time a new scene unfolded before her eyes. Now before her stands burning Reim, where Tiarius, surrounded by corpses, has locked himself in a deadly duel with Luciola. No doubt these are attempts by this place to frighten her with a future that will certainly never come to pass. The filth summoned by aristocrats and the hired thugs of the self-proclaimed emperor will never match the empire's elite squads armed with cutting-edge technology. Cunning and treachery will never lead them to victory. That is how Alaria convinced herself that this delusion had nothing to do with reality. Though her personal experience opposing the Tanarsian legate suggested otherwise.
Behind the next door followed another scene. In it, Alaria was depicted as a demoness with marble-white skin, commanding a squad of some kind of thugs. Some of them themselves bore somewhat demonic features, albeit not on her level. Among them there was even one painfully familiar and painfully vile one-eyed face, reminiscent of one of the unscrupulous lackeys of the mad prince. Only here this lackey looked significantly older than his years, contrasting with the still equally young demoness. The strange procession wandered through a ghastly-looking gorge, putting to the sword the orcs they encountered along the way and, as one of the squad members put it, "***fiends". A strange sight. Was this place trying to frighten her with her own fears from the past, heavily exaggerating things? Fears she had long since overcome? Nonsense! But there was still something strange about this picture. Why would some demons kill other demons? A post-apocalyptic world view where everything is under the yoke of demons and they fight among themselves? Perhaps. Either way, it raised more questions than it actually frightened. Well, even masters like Mr. Asparagus sometimes slip up.
As it turned out, the maestro of horrors still had ways to surprise her. For in the new room, her eyes beheld... Reim. A clean, beautiful, and tidy Reim. A Reim of the future where the flying ships beloved by Master Twice were a perfectly ordinary thing. But, of course, this idealized vision couldn't do without a healthy dose of absurdity. On the throne of the imperial palace sat a mysterious woman, completely unknown to Alaria. At first everything seemed normal, but soon a group of... idols? approached her. They spoke of something to the new empress, she nodded importantly in response and soon departed together with them... only to appear on a stage in the center of Reim as the main performer. The crowd rejoiced in response to the ruler's performance, but gradually other corners of the empire appeared before Alaria's eyes, where residents listened just as entranced to what seemed such a distant song. A song that spread further and further until it encompassed the entire world. Perhaps in any other situation such a spectacle would have been a picture of a bright future, but the fact that such a future was shown to her in such a dreadful place said otherwise. There was something eerie about all of it, though it was hard to put into words exactly what. Unless... Alfarad hoped Alaria would perceive this vision that way? Give it an ominous undertone it doesn't have, and this is all his dearly loved mind games? Perhaps. Hard to say for certain.
Either way, lingering wasn't worth it. Perhaps the purpose of all these visions was to distract her from her goal. To make her forget... and why was she even here at all? Instinctively opening yet another door, the Tanarsian was blinded by a bright flash of light that soon completely engulfed her.
