mafs didn't start using status checks for some reason.

What's so bad about that? Why would mafs need to know the status if they can just throw a block? They're not going to be baptizing kids with towns.
I generally agree more with Romeo, but regarding who would kill, I could easily argue, here I don't see a clear picture. She could have just as easily told the princess, "loser, kill yourself," as Balzac could have explained that his dreams of friendship are just a lure, which is why he killed himself.
