In reality, under normal circumstances, Joe wouldn't have cared either way – getting paid was good enough. But in seeking revenge for the alchemist, he had a personal interest: the old pirate believed that if the miracle-worker had survived, he would have brewed a potion to restore his lost limbs. Now, due to the actions of unknown maniacs, the hopeful mercenary was left with nothing, and he yearned to find the scoundrels and reward them with the same fate they inflicted on the poor alchemist.
