The streets of Utaha, like any other city at night, were filled with the bright light of street lamps, and the light pollution made it almost impossible to see the stars in the dark sky. However, neither this, nor the crowds of the big city, nor even the not-so-fresh air bothered the young couple from Armeria. Doyle and Oyr Rogerfy were happy to finally leave their quiet village in Armeria and live as modern people should – surrounded by technology, fashion, and progressive trends. This kind of life seemed much more appealing to them than spending their best years in the backwoods. Doyle moved to Utaha thanks to a job at a large company involved in the timber industry, and he earned enough not only to cover the moving expenses and maintain a comfortable standard of living but also to allow his wife to be a housewife. He wanted her to avoid the stress associated with work and live as a lady should, instead of milking cows and picking cucumbers in their homeland.
“He-he, so, how do you like Utaha?” A month after Doyle started working at the company, his boss visited their rented apartment in the city center. “The city of all cities, isn’t it?”
“Exactly!” the employee agreed. “Sometimes, when I look from our tenth floor, I am simply amazed by the scale of human progress! From this height, people seem no more than ants!”
“And it’s so convenient,” his wife agreed. “More than a hundred families can fit in one such building! There are all sorts of shops around, you can buy anything and you don’t have to go far.”
“Yeah, civilization is great,” the boss cheerfully remarked and started to leave. “By the way, Doyle, I feel a little awkward asking you this, but could you pick up my package from the shipping company? The thing is, I wanted to give you a small gift, but I completely forgot to go there, and I have a problem with my knees, so you understand…”
The unusual request from his boss did not bother the young employee at all, and he happily ran to fulfill his employer’s request. Meanwhile, the boss and his Oyr were engaged in all sorts of indecent activities, which had been going on for some time. At first, Doyle’s young wife was strongly against the boss’s advances, but after learning that he could fire her husband if she made a fuss, she reluctantly agreed. Over time, this secret even began to excite her, and she even started to enjoy their time together. Now she eagerly waited for her husband to go to work so that she could begin another session of preserving the material well-being of their family. In the end, Doyle will have to raise another man’s child, but thanks to blissful ignorance, he will live a happy life.
Thus, the gods die.
