Interesting concept; as someone not very familiar with turn-based combat, I really like it!
I think that introducing "exotic" roles, as you put it, is a very interesting step because it greatly expands the tactical possibilities and moves the battle more towards a chess-like experience. Because the more "types of pieces" there are, the more vertices there will be in the graph of all possible events after n, n+1... moves.
I may have missed the discussion at some point, and it might have already been suggested (it's a 104-page thread, after all), but wouldn't expanding the grid help with this development of the battle? Or would the balance then need to be completely recalculated?
In any case, it's great that you've returned to working on this; I thought that in February, the project would end its existence, like many other good projects in other good places.
