Immelmann, who soon earned the nickname "The Lille Eagle," flew a Fokker E.III and could perform almost all of the complex aerobatic maneuvers known today. It was in the Fokker that he immortalized his name by performing what later became known as the Immelmann turn – a half-roll at the top of a loop. Immelmann was so famous on both sides of the front that within 10 minutes of his appearance in the air, the sky would be clear of English aircraft. He was one of the first to use the tactic of surprise, approaching from the sun. Many of his victims realized they were being attacked only when his bullets began to strike their fuselage. Immelmann was an excellent marksman – he rarely needed more than 25 shots to achieve victory. Once, he returned from a victory having used only 15 rounds.
