How do I send/request resources from the AI ally?

How do you give a gift to an ally in a single-player scenario when playing with an ally? Often, an ally sends a gift and asks for something in return. How do you give them the gift? Also, please tell me how the first player initiates this "gift exchange":confused:

Of course, I'm talking about Heroes of Might and Magic III.
