Felix enters the church after Unus, with a familiar gesture, scattering the mice scurrying in the corner. Inside, it looks somewhat less neglected than outside, but still sad. The floor is dirty, a couple of windows are missing panes, and gusts of the stormy March wind howl through the cracks. Only the priest's place – the pulpit and the altar – are in proper condition. A large fresco behind the altar, depicting the coming of the prophet, is illuminated by three candelabras, and a little light penetrates through the narrow windows, but it is clearly not enough, and most of the church is in semi-darkness.
The priest takes his place at the pulpit and immerses himself in reading, leaving Unus to pray.
