Allow yourself to be joyful, allow yourself to play wholeheartedly, let go of control, and when your inner child comes alive again and starts to dance, your whole life will change. The quality of your life will change. A sense of humor will awaken within you, a beautiful laughter, and there will be no trace of your seriousness left. You will learn to live from your heart.
Someone who lives only with their mind doesn't really know what it means to be alive. Only someone who listens to their heart and sings songs that make no sense to the mind is truly alive, someone who dances so wildly that the dance seems insane... simply because they are overflowing with joy, energy is pouring out, and they can no longer restrain themselves. Be like that! Do what you want! You will come alive, you will be able to taste life, you will discover what life really is.
A serious person is a walking corpse. They died even before death. Life gives us so many precious opportunities that it is a crime to exchange them for seriousness. Save your seriousness for the real death. Send seriousness to the grave, let it wait for your last day. But don't turn into a walking corpse while you're still alive.
This reminded me of a story related to Confucius. One of his disciples asked him a typical question, a question that thousands of other people had asked him: "Will you tell us a few words about what happens after death?"
Confucius replied: "Leave all these questions about death until the moment of death. You can contemplate them there, in the grave. But live now!"
There is a time to live, and there is a time to die. Don't confuse them, or you will miss both. Live fully, intensely, right now, and when the time comes to die, be completely present in death. Don't die halfway, so that only one eye dies, while the other continues to look; one hand dies, while the other continues to seek the truth. When you die, die completely... and then contemplate what death is. But right now, don't waste time thinking about something so distant. Live in the present moment.
Children know how to live an intense, full life; they are not afraid of losing control. Be yourself, don't restrain yourself. Start living from moment to moment, totally, joyfully, playfully, and you will see: there is nothing that could get out of your control. On the contrary, your mind will become even sharper, you will become younger, and your love will become deeper. Wherever you go, spread life, lightness, and joy around you as much as possible. Let every hidden corner of the earth be illuminated by your light. If the whole world starts laughing, enjoying life, and rejoicing, that will be a real revolution.
Serious people start and sustain wars, serious people commit murders, and they are the ones who commit suicide. Mental hospitals are full of serious people. Just look at the enormous harm that serious people have done to humanity. And you will jump out of your seriousness, you will allow the child within you to play, sing, and dance!
I teach you how to live with a light heart, how to play and create. Existence is our home: trees and stars are our brothers and sisters, rivers, mountains, and oceans are our friends. In this extremely friendly universe, are you sitting like a stone Buddha? My teaching is not for stone Buddhas; I want you to become a dancing Buddha. Followers of Buddhism might not like such a statement, but I don't care what anyone thinks. I care about the truth. If truth cannot dance, it is deficient; if a Buddha cannot laugh, something is missing; if a Buddha cannot play with children and cannot become a child himself, then he may have come close to the state of a Buddha, but he is still not fully awakened. Some part of him is still asleep."
