Generally, I don't really trust events like this that happen before combat quests. If the villagers are working with goblins, there's bound to be some kind of trick. But even if there isn't, there might be something like, "While you were resting, the goblins stole your equipment." However, I've been wrong about Revan's traps before, so I might be wrong.
