In light of the information acquired by the group at the adventurers' guild, everything looked far more ominous than "just" a series of raids. Considering the nature of goblins, what was happening in Ephemera could be a prelude to something bigger – for example, preparation for a campaign of conquest. And if such assumptions are correct, then the payment for the job was disproportionately small, relative to what their squad had to prevent, even considering that eliminating such a threat was also in their personal interests.
