This is only in the Orthodox tradition. In the Catholic tradition, it is permissible to be sad.

There is also a system that distinguishes between despondency and sadness, and does not include laziness. Laziness is considered a type of despondency, while sadness is considered something like a lack of stoicism and contempt for the worldly.
