I also dropped BG (the first one, I didn't even try the second), and it definitely wasn't due to technical aspects – even Arcanum was enjoyable despite its hour-long walks through mostly empty locations. From what I managed to see, it seems like there's something akin to "Pillars," but the dialogues, NPCs, and main storyline are downright degenerate, while the side quests are comparatively better.
The difficulty was even funnier, by the way – to complete it on the highest difficulty, you just had to blindly take everyone into your party and brute-force your way through. At least here, the "Pillars" were definitely top-notch with their custom companions and leveling system. Top-notch, if you ignore the crocodile-like flight, remembering the micro-management with pressing the same buttons in half-second intervals and battles that lasted for five minutes on the path of the damned.
